Pat Gorman Charities Foundation - Purpose of this foundation is to support the Sickle Cell Society, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky (PCAK), and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by raising money for education and research, or any other charitable purpose recognized by state or federal law. Local 227's Charity is the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We hold golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, raffles and other events to raise money. Currently, 34 researchers working at leading universities in the U.S. and Canada are moving closer to finding a cure with the support of UFCW contributions.

 
 
 
  Gospel Fest - May 7, 2010

  KY Thoroughbred's Horses & Horse Power 6th Annual Car Show
The Car Show is being held this year on the Great Lawn Water Front in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, May 15, 2010, registration 8:00 am. All proceeds will go to Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky. This location is easily accessible from Interstate I-64, I-65 & I-71. Print our flyer and registration form. James "Jay" Looney & Memorial Golf Tournament
The proceeds from this golf tournament will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Date of golf tournament is June 9, 2010 (Wednesday), 8:00 am tee time at Eagle Creek Golf Course in LaGrange, KY.

Faces of Our Children
UFCW Local 227 proudly supports Faces of Our Children Inc., which is dedicated to raising awareness, support and funding for the fight against Sickle-Cell Disease worldwide and the delivery of educational programs and materials via the Internet and mass media at work sites and schools through Community based organizations.

         FACTS:
  • Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited condition
  • One in twelve African Americans is a carrier of Sickle Cell Disease
  • Sickle Cell affects the genes that produce hemoglobin for red blood cells.
  • Sickle Cell Disease is also found in individuals from Turkey, Greece, Italy the Middle East and East India

    SIGNS OF SICKLE CELL
     
  • Anemia - a LOW NUMBER OF RED BLOOD CELLS
  • Aplastic Crisis - Sickle Cell may stop making red blood cells for a short time causing fast breathing, fast heart beat and less activity.
  • Painful Episodes - This happens when the Sickle Cells plug blood vessels blocking the flow of blood
  • Severe Infections - Such as sepsis (a blood stream infection) meningitis and pneumonia. Because the spleen does not function normally
