Why a Union How to Organize What to Expect Contact an Organizer Organizing FAQs

Local 227 helps non-union workers take the first step to a higher wage, better benefits, and the respect all workers deserve. Organizing a union makes all of us powerful. By protecting current contracts at Local 227 we provide security for our communities.

Non-union workers can be fired at any time for any reason – or for no reason at all. Employment at Will means employers can change the rules whenever they want.

You have a legal right to organize a union!

“Employees shall have the right to self organization, to form, join or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing and to engage in other concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid and protection…”
---Section 7, The National Labor Relations Act

A union contract is decided upon between a negotiating committee and the employer. They guarantee the rules don’t change so workers get the pay raises, holidays, vacations, hours, overtime pay etc. they deserve.

Once you have a union contract, a boss must follow a procedure to show a good reason to discipline or fire a worker. Union representatives will make sure you get a fair deal and your rights are protected.

Membership has its benefits. It pays to belong! UFCW members also receive special discounts on a variety of goods and services. Members may participate in Local 227’s Danny Dettlinger Memorial Scholarship Fund and the UFCW Scholarship program.
