UFCW Scholarship Application Deadline Extended to APRIL 15
The deadline for UFCW members and their unmarried dependents to apply for the UFCW scholarship has been extended to April 15,
2009. This year's scholarship winners will be notified via mail by Tuesday, June 19, 2009. Winners' names will be posted on the UFCW Web site, www.ufcw.org , after June 20th.

After nearly a decade of legal maneuverings and circumventions of federal law, Wal-Mart was finally forced to the bargaining table in Texas. More than nine years ago, meatcutters in a Jacksonville Wal-Mart voted for UFCW representation. What Wal-Mart proceeded to put these workers through was both unlawful and unconscionable.

Why Labor Law Doesn't Work for Workers
After months of a media war supporting and condemning it, the Employee Free Choice Act was finally introduced into Congress again this week. The bill has been debated before, but with a larger Democratic majority, its chances of passage are much greater today, and President Obama has said he'll sign it. Employers, therefore, are fighting it as never before.

Union files complaint on behalf of fired AJ's workers
The UFCW filed a complaint against AJ's Fine Foods in Scottsdale and also picketed the grocery store this week on behalf of the fired workers. Bakery clerk Mary Johnson, 63, said she was grilled by three company managers over a 25 cent charge that showed up on her cash-register tape and was questioned about whether she gave employees discounts. Johnson, a 14-year worker, said the store had inconsistent policies about charging employees for bakery items and added that she could not recall the 25 cent charge in question.
