UFCW Weekender

Following is a brief roundup of important articles and information for your weekend reading:

  • UFCW STATEMENT ON TRAGIC EVENT AT CONAGRA PLANT IN GARNER, NORTH CAROLINA

A horrific accident took the lives of three workers and injured 41 others in an explosion and roof collapse at the ConAgra Foods, Inc. facility in Garner, North Carolina, on June 9, 2009.  The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 204 represents 900 workers in that facility.
  • Why Labor Celebrates GLBT Pride Month

Labor has always been involved in making sure that those who are discriminated against in our society are protected in their workplace. Protected from harassment, protected from unfair firings because of who they are, and guaranteed the same rights and benefits as those around them.

  • American Prospect Turns the Limelight on Working Women

The American Prospect is doing a five-article series on working women, specifically bringing to people’s attention the women who don’t have the option to “opt out” of work.

  • A co-op for the public option? Let's talk principles.

We're going to see a lot of these kinds of "compromises" from now until we pass a health reform bill through Congress. First, we had the "trigger" proposal, designed to effectively kill a public health insurance option. Now, we have the "co-op" proposal.
