Many of you have seen the news of a Hepatitis A outbreak in Louisville. You can protect yourself and your family with a simple vaccine. If you are in the union sponsored health care plan you can get vaccinated for $15 at The Little Clinic. If you work in retail grocery and do not have insurance, you can walk in to the UofL Global Health Center Monday through Friday, 8a - 4:30p, and get vaccinated. The cost will be $25. We're helping the Louisville Department of Health & Wellness spread the word. You can learn more about where you can get vaccinated by clicking the link.
Forty-six grievances and 2 years of fighting resulted in a huge win for members at Carhartt in Hanson, KY on Friday! The hard work of UFCW 227 Chief Steward Rob Patterson and Assistant Chief Steward Matt Henderson, Union Representatives Ava Johnson and Ty Barnhart and Union Time Study Engineer Sharron Jobe, paid off, and union members will receive $406,882.48 in back pay and bonuses they deserve because of their hard work on April 20th. Our union brother Lee Shelton would be proud of this win and of the solidarity members showed during this fight.
Initial offers from the company to settle the grievances would have meant the majority of members in the affected job classifications would receive nothing because the declining bonus made up for some members’ lost money. It was important to the Union Stewards and Representatives that everyone benefit, so the decision was made to keep fighting until everyone in the affected job classifications received something.
The grievance procedure, outlined in the union contract, took a long time, but in the end union members were able to prove their argument – a valuable right that non-union workers don’t have. A settlement was reached that benefited everybody, in a way that was fair for everybody.
Picking will receive back pay of 68 cents per on standard hour worked between 1/1/16 and 12/31/17. Plus, a 5 cent bonus for every on standard hour in that same time period.
SRT operators that had a true money loss received that loss in back pay. Everyone else received 92 cents for every on standard hour worked between 1/1/16 and 12/31/17. Plus, a 5 cent bonus for every on standard hour in that same time period.
Freight members that had a true money loss were also made whole with back pay. The rest of the department received a 5 cent bonus for every on standard hour worked between 1/1/16 and 12/31/17.
Stocking received a 5 cent bonus for every on standard hour worked between 1/1/16 and 12/31/17. (Stocking began to receive a $6,900 declining bonus in mid-2017, which made them the least affected department).
Paid loss wages $390,852.13
“One of the incredibly valuable benefits of union membership is having Union Stewards like Rob and Matt fighting for you,” said UFCW 227 President Bob Blair. “We appreciate their hard work and we will never stop fighting for the better life that every member of UFCW 227 has earned for their families.”
