UFCW 227 Members Showing Up For Our Communities Across Kentucky

Across Kentucky, UFCW 227 members are proving that solidarity doesn’t stop at the workplace. Whether it’s fighting for fairness on the job or showing up for neighbors in need, our union is rooted in the belief that strong communities and strong unions go hand in hand. Over the the holiday season, members and staff stepped up in powerful ways—delivering food, learning from community partners, and spending their time helping others.

Serving Neighbors in Somerset

In Somerset, KY, union members came together to support Living Bread Soup Kitchen, an organization that provides meals and care to people who need it most. Members shopped for and delivered much‑needed food and supplies, turning compassion into action.

Brian C., Marty, and Gary Gibson (Tyson, Albany) handled the delivery, while Gina Gaylord, Director of Living Bread Soup Kitchen, welcomed the support and continues to lead vital work in the community.

This effort was made possible by the collective commitment of members, including Janet Evans (745), Kristen Harness (745), and Curtis Brinson (Prairie Farms), who may not all be pictured but were very much part of the impact.

Learning, Listening, and Giving Back in Paducah

In Paducah, union leaders showed up to learn more about how community organizations serve local families. Pilgrims Pride Chief Steward James Bibbo, Kroger 414 Steward Felicia Saleh, and Union Representative Kevin Diale spent time with Paducah Cooperative Ministries to better understand their work and how the union can continue to be a supportive partner.

The visit also included a meaningful contribution: the UFCW 227 Foundation proudly sponsored their work, helping ensure Paducah Cooperative Ministries can continue providing critical services to the community.

Delivering Hope in Owensboro

In Owensboro, union members and representatives came together to deliver food and supplies to the Daniel Pitino Shelter, supporting individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity.

Cooper Harris (Kroger 770), Cole Wardrip (Glenmore Distillery), and Tony Rusher (Glenmore Distillery)—alongside Union Representatives Jeremy Higdon and Ty Barnhart—made sure essential items reached the shelter and the people who rely on it.

Union Values in Action

These moments—shopping for food, delivering supplies, listening to community partners—are all expressions of the same core value: we take care of each other. This is the quieter work of the union, often happening outside of contract negotiations or grievance meetings, but just as important.

We are proud of every member, steward, and representative who continues to show what union solidarity looks like in action. When unions show up, communities are stronger—and together, we build something better for everyone.
