Get the most out of Tax Season
Updated: February 2026
What’s New (Updated 2026)
This article was refreshed to reflect current IRS tools and guidance, expanded tips for common life changes that affect taxes, and updated information on UFCW 227 member discounts for tax preparation services. The structure was also improved to make tax season preparation clearer and easier for members year-round.
Tax season is an opportunity to make sure you claim all the deductions and credits you’re eligible for — and keep more of your hard-earned money. Whether you’re filing for the first time, have major life changes, or just want to make sure you’re getting your maximum refund, this guide will help you prepare.
1. Start Early — and Get Organized
Gather your paperwork before tax season starts:
W-2s from employers
1099s (contract work, gig income, investment income)
Records of dependents, childcare expenses, and education costs
Proof of deductions and charitable contributions
Good recordkeeping makes filing easier and helps you find all deductions you qualify for.
2. Know What’s New This Year
Tax laws, credits, and deductions can change yearly. For the most current guidance — including updates to credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit — check IRS tools or updates at IRS.gov.
3. Use Free IRS Resources
The IRS offers free tools to help you prepare and file:
IRS Free File (free tax preparation software options)
“Where’s My Refund?” to track your refund
IRS2Go mobile app for real-time updates
Local Taxpayer Assistance Centers for in-person help
All of these are available at IRS.gov.
4. Take Advantage of Life Changes
Major events can affect your taxes:
Marriage or divorce
Birth or adoption of a child
Starting a business
Buying a home
These changes can impact your filing status, deductions, or eligibility for credits, so be sure to report them correctly.
5. Use Your UFCW 227 Member Discounts
As a member of UFCW Local 227, you have access to exclusive discounts on tax preparation services through:
Savings on Tax Act, Venn Tax and Turbotax
Savings on H&R Block, Intuit Turbotax, E-File.com, Credit Karma, and Alleviate,
To access discounts on either site you will need to sign in or create a log in to sign in, then search for “taxes”.
6. File Electronically & Choose Direct Deposit
Filing electronically and choosing direct deposit when possible is the fastest way to get your refund. Most refunds are issued within a few weeks after the IRS accepts your return, especially when e-filing.
7. Watch for Scams
Tax season is also peak time for phishing and scam attempts. The IRS will never initiate contact by email, text, or social media to request personal financial information. Be cautious and use official IRS.gov resources if you’re unsure.
