UFCW Local 227 Foundation

Did you know that UFCW 227 has a foundation that supports union members and their families in need? It also makes investments in communities and people to make life better for hard working men and women. Here’s your chance to find out just exactly what that means.

Most recently the UFCW 227 Foundation has been fundraising to assist members who were impacted by the tornadoes that ripped through western Kentucky on December 10, 2021. Thanks to generous donations from union members and individuals in communities around the country, the UFCW 227 Foundation has been able to help feed and get supplies for countless families and to send direct financial aid to UFCW 227 families who are working to rebuild or replace their homes.

Supporting Union Members and Others in Need

Though holding fundraisers hasn’t been an option during the pandemic the foundation has found a way to continue to offer support to union members in need of Hardship Grants. These grants help with utility bills, rent or mortgage assistance for union members out of work due to major life disasters. If you are out of work without pay due to illness, injury or experience housing loss such as flooding or a fire, you may qualify for assistance. Reach out to your stewards or Union Reps to discuss possible options.

Community Involvement and Investments

Every year the UFCW 227 Foundation donates to Bikes or Bust and Boxes of Love. These programs benefit the local community by donating hundreds of new bikes for kids and providing much needed holiday dinners.

The foundation makes annual investments in our city’s parks, through The Parks Alliance of Louisville, who bring critical green infrastructure to some of the most underserved communities in Louisville.

When the opportunity to support Violins of Hope came through Louisville, the Foundation board voted to donate to a collection of more than 50 restored instruments played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Louisville and our foundation funded the development of a documentary following local public school students as they participated in a citywide dialogue about music, art, social justice and free expression.

Investing in Our Members

UFCW 227 Foundation distributes five $2,000 scholarships for students pursuing post‐secondary education each year. UFCW Local 227 members, their spouses and dependents (children, step-children and grandchildren) are eligible to apply. Since 2000 the foundation has funded over $300,000 in college scholarships.

For our members, many of whom arrive here as refugees with nothing but the clothes on their backs we offer our New American Opportunity Fund that helps members pay for their U.S. Citizenship applications.

The most recent addition to our investment in our membership is with the Child Care Scholarship because being a working parent is hard and child care is expensive. Each quarter the foundation board will select five UFCW 227 members for awards of $750 in the months of March, June, September and December.
