At Home COVID Tests are Covered By Insurance

Starting January 15th, if you have health insurance you can get the cost of an at home COVID test covered. Up to 8 COVID tests per individual can be covered each month. Different insurance companies are handling this new requirement in different ways, so it’s important that you call your insurance company to find out how your COVID tests will be covered.

There are two ways for insurance companies to cover your tests:

1.       Reimbursement: If your insurance company chooses to reimburse you, you’ll want to make sure you keep your receipt to submit for reimbursement by your insurance company. They are required to cover the full cost of your tests. For example, if you buy a two-pack for $34 then you will receive $34 to cover the cost of your purchase. You can find out directly from your insurance company how to submit your claim to be reimbursed.

2.       Cover the Cost Upfront: If your insurance company chooses to cover the costs at the time you make your purchase, they will have set up a network of convenient options, such as pharmacies, where you can purchase your test and be covered. You can still purchase a COVID test out of network, but the insurance company will only be required to reimburse you up to $12 for your COVID test.
