Demetrio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Greek immigrants. After studying at the University of Buenos Aires, he traveled to the U.S. in 1985 to pursue higher studies at Iowa State University and the University of Kentucky. Following his marriage, he became a naturalized citizen on October 21, 1994.
